What Is Performance Marketing? How It Works for Ecommerce Brands
5 October 2026 · 8 min read

Performance marketing is advertising where every rupee or dollar is tied to a measurable result — a sale, a lead, an app install. You track what each ad produces, cut what doesn't pay, and put more money behind what does. For an ecommerce brand, that result is almost always one thing: profitable orders.
How performance marketing works
It runs as a loop, not a campaign you launch and forget:
- Track. Pixels, server-side events and analytics record every add-to-cart and purchase, and which ad caused it.
- Test. Run several creatives, offers and audiences at small budgets.
- Measure. Compare each against a target — usually cost per purchase or ROAS.
- Scale or cut. Winners get more budget; losers get switched off within days, not months.
Without step one, there is no performance marketing — just spending. That's why tracking is the first thing any serious team fixes.
Performance marketing vs digital marketing vs brand marketing
| Performance marketing | Brand marketing | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Sales, leads, installs now | Awareness and trust over time |
| Measured by | ROAS, CPA, revenue | Reach, recall, search demand |
| Feedback speed | Days | Months |
| Typical channels | Meta, Google, TikTok ads | Content, PR, sponsorships |
Digital marketing is the umbrella — everything online, including SEO, email and social posting. Performance marketing is the part of it that is paid, tracked and judged on results. The best brands run both: brand builds demand, performance captures it.
The main performance marketing channels
- Meta (Facebook & Instagram) ads — creates demand by putting products in front of people who weren't searching. The workhorse for most ecommerce brands, especially in Pakistan. More on Meta ads.
- Google ads — Search, Shopping and Performance Max capture people already looking for what you sell. More on Google ads.
- TikTok ads — cheap attention and fast creative testing, strongest for visual, impulse-friendly products. More on TikTok ads.
- Affiliates and influencers on commission — paid only when a sale happens through their link or code.
Pricing models you'll see
- CPM — pay per 1,000 impressions. How Meta and TikTok mostly charge.
- CPC — pay per click. Common on Google Search.
- CPA — pay per action, like a purchase or lead.
- Revenue share / commission — a percentage of sales, typical for affiliates.
Whatever the platform charges, judge everything on one number: what it costs you to get a profitable order.
The metrics that actually matter for ecommerce
- ROAS (return on ad spend) — revenue ÷ ad spend. A 4x ROAS means PKR 4 back for every PKR 1 spent. What's a good ROAS?
- Break-even ROAS — 1 ÷ your gross margin. Below it, you lose money on every sale. Work yours out with the ROAS calculator.
- CPA — cost per purchase. Must sit below your profit per order.
- MER — total revenue ÷ total marketing spend. The honest, whole-business view that platform dashboards can't inflate.
- AOV — average order value. Raising it makes every ad cheaper — 8 ways to increase AOV.
- Delivered ROAS — the one Pakistani COD brands forget. Count only orders that were actually delivered and paid, not orders placed. See how to reduce RTO.
Is performance marketing right for your brand?
It works best when you have:
- A product with enough margin to pay for ads (roughly 40%+ gross margin makes life easier).
- Tracking you trust — Pixel, Conversions API and analytics set up properly.
- A steady supply of new creative. Ads fatigue; fresh creative is the main lever.
- Patience for 2–4 weeks of testing before judging results.
If your store isn't converting yet, fix that first — ads only multiply what's already there. Start with why a Shopify store doesn't get sales.
What to ask a performance marketing agency
- Which number do you optimise for — and is it based on my margin?
- Who owns the ad account, pixel and data? (It should be you.)
- How many new creatives do you test each month?
- How do you report — platform ROAS, or real revenue after returns?
- What happens in the first 30 days?
